Mylapore
Mylapore is an ancient but now bustling suburb of Chennai city, the capital of the southern state of Tamil Nadu. The highly venerated Shiva shrine, dedicated to Lord Kapaleeshwarar, is situated here with a beautiful tank in front and surrounded by traditional, tiled houses. The busy temple area still retains the old-world charm.
The divine consort is Karpagambigai. Tamil Saivite poet Gnanasambandhar (seventh century AD), by singing the glory of the Lord, is believed to have brought a merchant community girl, by name Poompaavai, back to her life from her ashes.
Mylapore is the birthplace of Vaishnavite saint Pey Alwar, the great Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar and a Jain saint Neminathar, indicating that Vaishnavism, Saivism and Jainism flourished here once.Historians believe that the original temple of Lord Kapaleeshwarar might have been situated along the eastern coast in what is now the Santhome Beach.
