Chakrapani Temple Kumbakonam

Chakrapani Temple Kumbakonam Chakrapani Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in Kumbakonam. This temple is located 2 km, away towards North West from the Kumbakonam Railway Station.  Chakrapani temple is considered to be one of the most important Lord Vishnu temples in South India, along with Srirangam and Tirupati. Seven of the Alwars sang the glories of this temple. Lord Sarangapani is the presiding Deity of the temple . Lord Vishnu appears in the form of a discus or Chakra to put down the pride of Surya, who subsequently became his devotee. Like Shiva, Lord Chakrapani has a third eye on His forehead.

Most of the temple was built by the Nayak kings between the 13th and 17th centuries, but the central shrine dates to the end of the Chola period. There are two entrances for entering the central shrine of the temple.You enter the southern entrance during the dakshinayana period, when the sun is in the Southern Hemisphere and the northern entrance during the period of uttarayana, when the sun is in the northem hemisphere. DIVINESS OF THE TEMPLE: The images of Chakrapani and with 8 arms and Sudarshanavalli Thayar with a gracious visage are inspiring. Brahma, Surya and Agni are depicted as worshipping the Lord. According to legend, Surya once competed with Vishnu to decide who was brighter. Vishnu appeared in the form of a Chakra and put down the pride of Surya. Like Shiva, Lord Chakrapani has a third eye on His forehead. AUSPICIOUS DAYS: Satuardays are special, Vaikunda Ekadasi and Masi maham are other famous festivals celebrated in this Temple.

The temple is one of the most prominent temples in Kumbakonam. According to legend, Lord Vishnu sent Sudarshana Chakra to Patal Lok to kill the demon Jalandasura and have come out through river Cauvery. God Brahma, who was taking bath in the river, got impressed and installed Sudarshana Chakra here. There is a bronze idol of King Serfoji II worshipping the Lord; who was cured of illness.

It is believed who are mentally or physically weakened by illness or problems can be cured here. The Sun God worshipped Lord Vishnu here and therefore those facing problems due to planetary movements in their life or Shani, Rahu and Ketu Dosh are advised to pray to Lord Chakrapani.This is among one of the Vishnu temples which takes part in the Mahamaham festival.
